SPORTS BRIEFS: VC Cup kicks off on Monday

KATHMANDU, April 25: Inter-campus Vice Chancellor Cup Volleyball Tournament is set to kick off on Monday at Shankar Dev Campus, Ram Shah Path.



Twenty teams affiliated to the Tribhuvan University (TU) will participate in the week long VC Cup, said the organizer Free Students Union (FSU) of the campus at a press conference on Monday. [break]



FSU Chairman Subharam Basnet said there has been a sharp rise in the number of teams participating this year.



The total cost of the tournament is estimated to be Rs 250,000 out of which Rs 150,000 was provided by the TU students´ welfare fund. Around 100 volunteers will be present to ensure security for the participants.





20 players in CAN closed camp training



KATHMANDU, April 25: Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) called 20 players on Sunday for a closed camp training for the ICC World Cricket League Division 4, scheduled to be held in August in Italy. The closed camp will kick off on May 1.



The selection committee headed by Bijay Kumar Sharma called Paras Khadka, Gyanendra Malla and Shakti Gauchan in the team. Likewise, Sharad Vesawkar, Mahesh Chhetri, Anil Kumar Mandal, Dipendra Chaudhary, Basanta Regmi, Binod Das, Sanjam Regmi, Rahul BK, Mehboob Alam, Naresh Bahadur Budhaair and Binod Bhandari are in the list of 20.



Amrit Bhattarai, Suvash Khakurel, Manjit Shrestha, Prithu Baskota, Sunam Gautam, Pradeep Airi have also been called for the camp.



Nepal had won the ICC World Cricket League Division 5 and qualified for Division 4.





LRI, EPS win matches



KATHMANDU, April 25: LRI and EPS won their respective matches on Sunday during the Third Chief of the Army Staff Inter School Running Cricket Tournament being held at the BSAM Cricket Ground, Bhaktapur.



LRI defeated Princeton School by nine wickets. Batting first, Princeton were all out for 80 runs in 16.5 overs. LRI met the target in 11.5 overs losing a wicket. Shishir Pandey struck unbeaten 45 runs for LRI.



Likewise, EPS thrashed Rajan Memorial School by 10 wickets. Rajan Memorial were all out for 80 runs in 16.1 overs. In reply, EPS met the target in 9.4 overs without losing any wicket.
