SPORTS BRIEFS: NPC's unbeaten run ends

KATHMANDU, Jan 6: Nepal Police Club (NPC)´s unbeaten run came to an end in the Sixth Dhorpatan Blue Sky Cup Women´s Double League Volleyball on Thursday.



Defending champions Gyanu Baba School overcame a set down to defeat NPC 25-19, 25-16, 25-22, 25-16. [break]



With the victory, Gyanu Baba have 15 points but they also have a game in hand. Gyanu Baba, led by national player Manju Gurung, looked nervous in the first set but regained their winning form as they took the lead in the next three sets and didn´t allow their title contender NPC to come back in the game.



In another match of the day, Workers Martyrs Memorial Club (WMMC) bounced from a second set defeat to register a 25-14, 22-25, 25-17, 25-23 victory over Tops School. Roshni Rai of WMMC and Kopila Upreti of NPC were adjudged the woman of the match in their respective games.



Bara in cricket QF



Bara district thrashed Nuwakot by 251 runs on Thursday and entered into the quarterfinal of the Madhyamanchal Inter-district Cricket Tournament organized by District Sports Development Committee, Mahottari. Bara, electing to bat first, put up 305/8 in allotted 38 overs at the Mahottari Cricket Ground. Santosh Jaisawal (81 runs), Kumar Thapa (69 runs), Khalid Hawari (59 runs) and Surya Raj Paswan (32 runs) were the major contributors for Bara. In reply, Nuwakot were all out for 54 runs in 14.4 overs as Jata Shankar Sharraf took six wickets. Sharraf bowled 7.5 overs and gave away 19 runs to take six wickets. Rajesh Shrestha, who scored nine runs, was top-scorer for Nuwakot.


Zameer, Yadav in semis



Cindy Zameer and Sandhya Yadav of Binayak English High School advanced to the semifinals of the Valley-wide U-15 Badminton Championship at their home court on Thursday. Zameer defeated Shraddha Dangol of Jagat Mandir 2-0 in the quarterfinal while Yadav ousted Sarita Shrestha of Bigyan School 2-0 in straight sets. Likewise, Sushmita Gurung of Advance School and Anila Shrestha also secured semifinal berths. Altogether 40 students from 12 schools are competing in the event.



Prime defeat Whitehouse



Prime College defeated Whitehouse 36-23 in a girls´ round robin match of the Eighth Prime Cup Inter-college Basketball Tournament on Thursday. With the victory, Prime have secured the top spot winning all their round robin matches. Both the teams had already sealed final berths before the match securing the top two positions among six teams. Whitehouse and Prime will also vie for the title in the boys´ category. The finals are scheduled to be held on Saturday at the court of Prime College, Naya Bazar.
