SPORTS BRIEFS: Nepal to participate in Nehru Cup

KATHMANDU, Aug 3: All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) announced on Friday that Nepali national team would participate in the Nehru Cup, an international football tournament organized in India.



The 2012 edition of the Nehru Cup is scheduled to start August 21 and end on September 2. [break]



ANFA issued a press note Friday and informed that Krishna Thapa would look after the national team as chief coach while former national team captains Hari Khadka and Upendra Man Singh would be his assistants.



ANFA said Cameroon, Syria, India and the Maldives would participate in the tournament.



ANFA has also announced that training sessions for national squad would start from Sunday in the capital.



Ace, Trinity and Rupy´s in QF



KATHMANDU
: Ace, Trinity and Rupy´s International on Friday advanced to the quarterfinals of the Second Ace Inter A-level College Basketball Tournament. Ace defeated Rato Bangala 24-15 with 14 points from Thukten Lama. Sar Bahadur Budathoki´s 20 points guided Trinity to a 45-27 victory over GEMS. Rupy´s routed Xavier International 41-23 with Rasis Bista´s 16 points.



Saipal Academy and GEMS registered victories in girls´ category. In the matches played at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium, Saipal thrashed Rupy´s 20-4 with eight points from Maya Rai. [break]Meanwhile, GEMS registered 16-13 victory over host Ace College. Ayesha Prajapati scored nine points for the winning side.



U-19 team beats Northern Territory Academy


KATHMANDU: Nepal U-19 cricket team registered three wickets victory over Northern Territory (NT) Academy in the third practice match ahead of the U-19 World Cup in Australia on Friday. Winning the toss, NT opted to bat first and scored 195 runs in 50 overs losing nine wickets. Rahul BK grabbed four wickets to restrict NT to the small total. Nepal´s middle order batsman Naresh Budaayer scored unbeaten 93 runs to script the victory for Nepal.



Skipper Prithu Baskota scored 23 runs while Hasim Ansari scored 16 runs. In two friendly matches played earlier in Darwin, Nepal U-19 had faced 98 runs defeat at the hands of NT Strike Seniors while it had registered 255 runs victory over Darwin U-17 team. Nepal will play a friendly against Papua New Guinea on August 7 and another friendly against New Zealand on August 8.
