SPORTS BRIEFS: Joseph Dojo clinches title

KATHMANDU, April 10: Joseph Dojo of Kathmandu clinched the title of the Fourth Budokai Karate and Kick-boxing Tournament held in Melamchi of Sindhupalchowk on Saturday. The dojo won five gold, seven silver and eight bronze medals.



Likewise, Mahankal Dojo stood second with four gold, five silver and three bronze while Gaushala Dojo finished third with three gold, two silver and one bronze. [break]



Chayani Maharjan of Mansingh Dojo was adjudged the best player in girls´ category and Pawan Rana Magar of Sindhupalchowk was declared the best player in the boys´ category. Thangpaldhap Dojo of Sindhupalchowk received the award for disciplined team.



Altogether 350 players had participated in the tournament in 29 events that kicked off on Friday.





SAG medalists awarded



KATHMANDU, April 10: Nepal Karate Federation on Saturday awarded cash prizes and letters of appreciation to the karatekas who bagged medals in the 11th South Asian Games (SAG).



Nepal had bagged three gold, two silver and two bronze medals in the SAG held in Dhaka two months ago.







Gold medalists Sunil Lama, Binod Shakya and Ganga Adhikari were awarded Rs 25,000 each. Likewise, silver medalists Binod Maharjan and Anu Adhikari received Rs 15,000 each while bronze medalist in individual event Kushal Shrestha bagged Rs 10,000. Bronze medalists in team event Ganesh Bahadur Thing, Parshu Ram Bastola and Kushal Shrestha each bagged Rs 5,000 each.



The NKF also felicitated the team´s coaches, managers and SAG referees in karate.



Meanwhile, judokas Rajan Joshi and Allen Maharjan were awarded Rs 4,000 each by Lalitpur´s Chalthali Club for winning bronze in the SAG and the Fourth Rajiv Gandhi International Judo Championships, respectively.





Athletes felicitated



KATHMANDU, April 10: Khagendra Sports Foundation and Veterans Players´ Group felicitated 11th South Asian Games (SAG) gold medalist Rajendra Bhandari and two other national record holder athletes on Saturday.



Bhandari had won gold in marathon while Keshari Chaudhary and Dhirendra Chaudhary hold the national record in high-jump and hurdles respectively.



Along with the three players, veteran players Ram Krishna Maharjan and Mahendra Dangol were also felicitated on the occasion.







Bhandari was awarded a purse of Rs 10,101 and a track suit while the Chaudhary duo received Rs 5,000 each. During the function, three-time SAG gold medalist in marathon Baikuntha Manandhar received the honorary membership of the foundation.



Meanwhile, Maharjan was given farewell to participate in the International Nagano Marathon Championships to be held in Japan on April 18. Maharjan is participating in the above 50 years category in his own expense. Around 28,000 athletes are set to compete in the marathon.



Maharjan´s target is to finish the marathon in two hours 45-50 minutes to secure the 50th position. He has been participating in various veteran international marathon competitions since 2002.
