Chandra Lama of Freedom Fighter was declared the best player of the tournament while Milan Rai of the same team was adjudged the man of the match. Lama was awarded Rs 5,000. [break]The tournament was organized by former national players with the view to supporting an orphanage in Kathmandu. Football coach Baiju Kapali gave away the prizes to the winners. Manakamana Cable Car was the chief sponsor of the event managed by Group of Event Entertainers.
Nepal defeated by Lithuania
KATHMANDU: Nepal was defeated 2.5-1.5 on Friday during the 10th round of 40th Olympiad of Chess being held in Istanbul, Turkey. Candidate Master (CM) Keshav Shrestha was the only player to win his board while another CM Rupesh Jaiswal was held to a draw. FIDE Master Manish Hamal and Prachanda Man Malakar lost their matches. Shrestha rated 2127 defeated 2344 rated Toudevas Virdikas in the 48th move. Jaiswal, who the CM title on Thursday played draw against 2378 rated International Master Kestutis Lavecas in the 36th move. With only one round left, Nepal dropped to the 126th position on Friday from overnight´s ranking of 117.
Beach volleyball in Pokhara
KATHMANDU: Nepal Volleyball Association is organizing the third edition of National Men´s Beach Volleyball Tournament from September 27 in Pokhara. The three-day long tournament will feature 18 teams in total with two teams each from five development regions, three departmental teams -- Nepal Police, Nepal Army and Armed Police Force (APF), and University Sports Association, the organizers announced during a press conference in the capital on Saturday. The top three teams of the tournament will bag Rs 20,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. The fourth and fifth team will receive Rs 5,000 each as consolation prize. The event will be held at the Beach Volleyball Court of Lakeside, Pokhara. The expected cost of the tournament is Rs 825,000.
Umesh Lama scores hat-trick for Nayabasti
KATHMANDU: Umesh Lama netted a hat-trick for Nayabasti Shakshyamnagar Club as it thumped Samaj Kalyan Khelkud Kendra 5-0 on Saturday in the Red Bull C Division Football League being held at the Chyasal ground, Kathmandu. Lama scored in the 18th 35th and 81st minute for the winning team. The other goals came from Tej Gurung and Dinesh Shahi. In other matches, Sanepa Club and Planning Boys United Club emerged victorious. Sanepa edged past Charumati Youth Club 2-0 with goals coming from Bikram Adhikar in the 28th and Rubin Rai in the 35th minute. In another match, Planning Boys edged past Sano Guacharan 4-3. Anil Rai, Denim Rai, Binod Karki and Lile Magar were on target for Planning Boys while Prabin BK netted twice for Sano Gaucharan after Kiran Lama had put the team ahead.
Kafle, Karki win road race
KATHMANDU: Laxman Kafle of Basu Higher Secondary School and Dilmaya Karki of National College clinched gold under boy´s and girl´s section on Saturday in the Road Race organized on the occasion of national education and international literacy day. Kafle completed the 5 km race in 17minute 21.09 second to secure first position. Raju Shrestha (18 minutes 15.7 seconds) and Bishnu Karki (19 minutes 31.50 seconds) of Tokha Higher Secondary School finished second and third. Karki finished the 3 km distance in 14 minutes 14 seconds to claim the girl´s title. Sangita Khadka (14 minutes 16 seconds) of Bijeshwari Gyan Mandir and Sharmil Chhetri of Gastro Boarding School (14 minutes 38 seconds) finished second and third respectively. The top three runners of both categories were awarded with Rs 15,000 Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively. The event was organized by the Ministry of Education.
Pyramid in quarterfinal
KATHMANDU: Pyramid International College on Saturday advanced into the quarterfinal of college boy´s category in the First Inter-school and College (+ 2 ) Basketball Tournament being held in the capital. In the league match of group D, Pyramid thrashed Brooklyn 32-10 with 15 points coming from Neusom Puri. In other matches of same category, Premier edged past Bridgewater 35-31, Kathmandu Unified thrashed Kumari College 34-13, VS Niketan overcame Gyan Niketan 32-11 and Namgyal beat Classic 31-19.
Mitrapark, Children Model win team titles
KATHMANDU: Mitrapark Dojo won the team championship title under dojo and Children Model School took school category title of the Third Newton Valley-wide Gojukoi Karate Championship on Saturday. Mitrapark claimed nine golds and one silver and bronze medal each to lift team championship title. Similarly, Children took home five gold and silver apiece and three bronze medals. Mandikathar Dojo and Hattigauda secured second and third places under dojo while Golden Peak and Valley Public won second and third positions under school category. The two-day long event was organized by Newton School.
Rashika Poudel steals the show
KATHMANDU: Rashika Poudel of Pathshala School stole the show during the First Inter Rotary Swimming Championship on Saturday as she clinched six golds and one silver to bag the best player award. She won the medals in both girls´ U-12 category as well as open category during the event that featured 44 swimmers from 15 schools of the valley and 10 swimmers from Rotary Club. Poudel´s schoolmate Ansita Giri won two golds and two silvers in the girl´s U-10 years age group. In the boys´ section of the same age group, Tarun Bhandari of Valley View School secured gold. Likewsie, Chhiring Chombi of HIMS won gold in 50 m freestyle in the boys´ U-12 years age group while Devesh Manandhar won the title of 50 m freestyle in the open category.
