Former Nepal champion Surbir Lama finished second with seven points, while Purushottam Chaulagain had to settle for the third position despite having seven points. Lama overcame Chaulagain in direct encounter format. Lama received Rs 10,000 while Chaulagain settled for Rs 7,000.[break]
Twin victories for TIA
KATHMANDU: TIA registered twin victories on Wednesday in the Second NEA Inter-school Basketball Tournament. TIA overcame Ganesh School 27-22 in the boys´ category while TIA edged past Valley Public 28-26 in the girls´ section. Nishant Thakuri netted 14 points for the boys´ team while Riya Thapa scored 11 points for the girls´ team. In other matches, Valley Public defeated British Gorkha Academy 36-16 with 12 points from Pradeep Nepal. Similarly, Ajay Kunwar´s 13 points guided Innovative to a 36-16 win over Bhadrakali.
Rajan Memorial, BVS register wins
KATHMANDU: Rajan Memorial and Brihaspati Vidya Sadan won their respective matches in the Fifth Chief of Army Staff Inter-school Running Cricket Tournament on Wednesday. In the matches played at the Army School Ground, Bhaktapur, Rajan Memorial registered a 78-run victory over GCA while Brihaspati defeated EPS by five wickets. In the first match, Rajan Memorial won the toss and scored 157 runs losing four wickets. Anil MC scored 43 runs while Pramod Khatri scored 28 runs. Omik Pradhan grabbed two wickets for GCA. Chasing 158 runs for victory, GCA was restricted to 79 runs in 16.4 overs.
Omik Pradhan scored 19 runs. Sujan Chapagain and Aryan Adhikari took two wickets each for Rajan Memorial. In another match, EPS won the toss and scored 140 runs losing nine wickets. Aatish Karki scored 37 runs. Ayush Regmi and Biraj Tandukar grabbed two wickets each for Brihaspati. In reply, Brihaspati met the target in 17.5 overs losing five wickets. Pratik Kanth scored 47 runs off 32 balls. Samrat Khanal and Prakash Shah took two wickets each for EPS.
Prime into final
KATHMANDU: Defending champion Prime College advanced into the final of KCM Basketball Bash on Wednesday in the boys´ section. Prime defeated Premier 50-48 in the first semifinal with 15 points from Siddhartha Maharjan. In another match, Anish Shahi´s 21 points helped Golden Gate register a 56-45 victory over NASA.
U-16 team eyes Elite Cup title
KATHMANDU: Nepal´s U-16 national cricket team is participating in the ACC U-16 Elite Cup scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from May 4 to 13.
"We want to return home with the title," said U-16 skipper Dipendra Chand during a function held at the Dasharath Stadium to bid farewell to the team on Wednesday.
Member Secretary of National Sports Council Yuvaraj Lama and Senior Vice-president of Cricket Association of Nepal TB Shah bade farewell to the players. Speaking on the occasion, Lama urged the players to perform well in the tournament. "We will be watching your performance and our wishes are with you."
Coach Manjur Alam Khan said the team will focus on every match. "Bowling and batting are the key strengths of our team. Our spinners are capable of winning matches for us."
"There´s pressure on us but we take it as a challenge. We are mentally and physically fit for the tournament."
Skipper Chand said they have an all-round team. "I want to lift the trophy as we had finished second in the last edition. Though we didn´t have enough practice, we are capable of lifting the trophy."
Media Cup football from June 19
KATHMANDU: Nepal Olympic Museum (NOM) is organizing the Fifth Media Cup Football Tournament from June 19 in the capital with a view to strengthening relations between different media organizations. According to the organizer, the event -- stalled since 2061 BS -- is also aimed at raising funds for NOM, which is dedicated to the preservation of historical material of Nepali sports.
"The NOM established 18 years ago had not received regular financial support from any agencies. Thus the tournament is also an initiative taken by the NOM for self-dependence," said a press statement issued by the organizer on Wednesday. NOM has also urged media organizations to register their teams by May 28.
