SPORTS BRIEFS: First int'l victory for Afghans

KATHMANDU, Sept 10: Afghanistan achieved its first international victory in women´s football with a convincing 4-0 win over Pakistan in its second group match of the SAFF Women´s Championship on Monday. Shabnam scored a brace for Afghanistan, while Hailali Argharndiwal and Marjan added one each.

The win also kept alive Afghanistan´s hopes of making it to the semifinals from Group B. Afghanistan is currently in second position in the group with four points.



The result of the last match to be played against Nepal is likely to determine the team´s place in the last four. If Afghanistan loses the match, its fate will depend on the result of the other match between Maldives and Pakistan. [break]Maldives also has a point in hand and if it beats Pakistan, goal superiority between Maldives and Afghanistan will decide the other semifinalist from the group. Pakistan has already crashed out of the tournament following its second defeat.



Second win for Sahara UK in Hampshire League



KATHMANDU
: Sahara FC UK, a UK-based football club formed by Nepalis residing in England, achieved its second victory in the Hampshire League on Sunday. The club which started playing professional English football from this season edged past Frimley Wanderers 4-1. Last week Sahara had defeated Hartley Sunday 3-2. On Sunday, Raygon Gurung netted twice for Sahara while Bahar Laksamba and Lok Bandhu Gurung netted one each to ensure a comfortable victory, according to Min Bahadur Gurung, general secretary of the club.



Laksamba is a former player of New Road Team (NRT), a top flight football club of Nepal, and Lok Bandhu is a former Nepali international. Nawal Gurung, former coach of Himalayan Sherpa Club, and Khum Gurung, former midfielder of Manang Marshyangdi Club, were also part of the Sahara team. Sahara is playing in the lowest league of English Football and if promoted every year, the club will secure Premier League berth after nine years.

Young Heart into girls´ final



KATHMANDU
: Young Heart School on Monday advanced into the school girls´ final of the First Inter-school and College (+2) Basketball Tournament being held in the capital. In the round robin league, Young Hearth defeated Namgyal 23-10 to secure a final berth as the league topper. Sunita Tamang netted 13 points for the winning team. Young Heart will vie for the title with Lord Buddha which finished second in the league. In another match, East Pole edged past South Point 6-2 with all six points coming from Soni Thapa. In the college boys´ category, Premier and Liverpool secured quarterfinal berths. Premier thumped St Lawrence 34-9 with 12 points from Sandip Acharya. Similarly, Kathmandu Unified edged past Liverpool 39-23 riding on 13 points of Sumit Khatri. The tournament is organized by Bajra International College.



Nihon shotokan registered at NSC



KATHMANDU
: Nepal Nihon Shotokan Karate Do Association has been registered as the 123rd sports association at the National Sports Council (NSC), it was announced during a press conference held in the capital on Monday. The association formed an ad hoc committee with Ishwar Bahadur Gurung as its president and Yugal Mukhiya, Mohan Kumar Karki, Bhuwan Lal Shrestha and Janardan KC as vice-presidents. Bhimsen KC, Ramesh Shakya and Shyam Lopchan are the general secretary, treasurer and secretary of the committee respectively. Sanjay Lama, Satyanarayan Shrestha, Dharma Ratna Khaitu and Surendra Rai are the members. Sanjay Lama is the chief coach.



Three get FIDE Arbiter license



KATHMANDU
: The number of Nepali FIDE Arbiters has reached nine after three national arbiters received the license of FIDE Arbiter recently. National arbiters Niranjan Prajapati, Suman Duwal and Dharma Ratna Bajracharya were awarded the FIDE Arbiter license by the 83rd FIDE Congress held in Istanbul, Turkey from September 7-9.



Div 4 champion squad retained for ACC Trophy



KATHMANDU
: Nepal has retained the same squad that won the title of ICC World Cricket League Division 4 in Malaysia on Monday for the ACC Elite Cup Trophy. According to a press statement issued by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), the tournament will be held from October 1-12 in Dubai. Paras Khadka is the captain and Gyanendra Malla is the vice-captain of the team. The other players in the team include Anil Mandal, Subash Khakurel, Sharad Vesawkar, Shakti Gauchan, Pradip Aire, Basanta Regmi, Binod Das, Sanjam Regmi, Amrit Bhattarai, Prithu Baskota, Rahul BK and Chandra Saud. Bhuwan Karki, Avinash Karn, Binod Bhandari and Krishna Karki are the reserve players.



Nayabasti, Sanepa win



KATHMANDU
: Nayabasti Shakshamnagar Youth Club and Sanepa Club won their respective matches on Monday in the Red Bull C Division Football League in the capital. Maintaining its cent percent winning run, Nayabasti edged past Planning Boys United 2-0. Krishna Khadgi and Umesh Lama scored a goal each for the winning team. In another match, lone goal from Tek Bahadur Limbu sealed Sanepa´s 1-0 win over Samaj Kalyan Khelkud Kendra. Meanwhile, Charumati Youth Club and Sabi Gaucharan Youth Club shared points playing 2-2 draw.
