SPORTS BRIEFS: Both APF teams into semis

KATHMANDU, June 10: Departmental team Armed Police Force (APF) saw both of its team book semifinal tickets on Sunday in the Pentagon Second Women´s National Beach Volleyball Tournament being held at the TU beach court, Kirtipur.



Team of Binita Budhathoki and Nebico Chaudhary, and another pair of Nima Shrestha and Jyoti Chaudhary registered straight sets wins to secure the semifinal spots. [break]



Budhathoki and Chaudhary´s pair outplayed departmental rival Nepal Police Club´s team of Parbati Aryal and Indira Kathayat 21-8, 21-5. Similarly, Shrestha and Chaudhary´s pair outclassed Binita Thapa and Saraswati Thapa´s pair from Mid-western Region 21-10, 21-15.



In other quarterfinal matches, Sushila Thapa and Kopila Upreti´s pair of Nepal Police, Ramila Tandukar and Kamala Pun´s pair of Central Region also emerged victorious.



Thapa and Upreti´s registered a comfortable 21-6, 21-5, win over Manisha Tamang and Kripa Adhikari´s of Central Region, Tandukar and Pun´s team edged past Manju Gurung and Aruna Rai´s pair of Western Region 16-21, 21-12, 15-6.



Thapa and Upreti´s pair of Police will take on Binita Budhathoki and Nebico Chaudhary´s team of APF, while Tandukar and Pun´s team of Central Region will lock horns against Nima Shrestha and Jyoti Chaudhary´s pair of APF.

The three-day long tournament is participated in by 14 teams -- two team each of five development regions, Nepal Police and APF.



Nepal wins two medals in Asian Sambo C´ship


KATHMANDU: Nepal won two medals in the Asian Sambo Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Sunita Magar won silver in women´s 64 kg sambo and Govinda Khatri bagged bronze in men´s 62 kg combat sambo. The four-day event began on Wednesday and concluded on Sunday. According to Nepal Sambo Association, players from 26 countries took part in the event. Meanwhile, Bhairaja Bhandari of Nepal was a referee during the event.



3X3 basketball tournament with highest cash prize


KATHMANDU: Ruslan Big Bucks 3X3 Open Basketball Tournament with total cash prize of Rs 200,000 will begin at the GAA hall in Kathmandu from June 13; it was announced during a press conference in the capital on Sunday.



According to Dipesh Ghale, CEO of Kgarira, the event manager group informed that winner of the tournament will bag a purse of Rs 100,000 and the runner up and second runner up will receive Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively. Similarly, Most Valuable Player will be awarded with Rs 25,000. The tournament is open to all participants.



According Ghale, they have planned to make it an annual event including girl´s category from next year. 16 to 20 teams are expected to participate in the tournament. “Nepal Basketball Association will provide technical support while Ruslan Vodka is the main sponsor. The four-day tournament will be held in knockout format.



During the last day of tournament will see various programs like BMX stunt showcase, skateboard tricks, food stalls and live performance by musical bands.


U-19 defeated by APF


KATHMANDU: Nepal APF Club registered a 25 run victory over U-19 team in the eighth practice match played at TU Ground, Kirtipur on Sunday. U-19 team is playing practice matches to prepare for the U-19 Asian Cup Cricket Tournament to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from June 23 to July 2. Nepal will also participate in the ICC U-19 World Cup in Australia in August. Winning the toss, APF opted to bat first and scored 130 runs losing all the wickets in 41.1 overs.



Basant Regmi was the highest scorer for APF with 34 runs off 62 balls. Pawan Shrestha and Sunam Gautam scored 16 runs each. Krishna Karki and Sagar Pun grabbed three wickets each while Rahul BK took two wickets. Chasing the low total of 131 runs, U-19 managed to score only 105 in 34 overs losing all wickets. Shakti Gauchan, Basanta Regmi and Sanjam Regmi grabbed two wickets each while Raju Basnyat took a wicket. Three batsmen of U-19 team were run out. Hasim Ansari scored 36 runs off 50 balls while Bhuwan Karki scored 26 runs.



Premier 3X3 basketball from Monday


KATHMANDU: The Second Premier Cup 3X3 National Basketball Championship will kick off on Monday at the covered hall of Dasharath Stadium. Altogether 24 men´s team and 12 women´s team are participating in the second edition of the championship. Teams from Kaski, Sunsari and Jhapa are also participating in the event. It will also serve as the qualifiers for First 3X3 World Basketball Championship scheduled to be held from August 23-26 in Athens, Greece. According ot Narendra Thapa, the senior vice president and technical director of Nepal Basketball Association 16 players will be selected from the championship in initial stage. Later four players each will be finalized for the World Championship after undergoing training.



Teresa, Golden Peak into final


KATHMANDU: Teresa Academy and Golden Peak on Sunday advanced to the final of Second Brooklyn Inter School Basketball Tournament. Teresa defeated Wilson Academy 74-64 with 44 points from Ravi Khadka. In another semifinal Rakesh Shrestha´s 15 points guided Golden Peak to a 54-18 win over Lovely Angel´s. Final and third place match will be held on Tuesday.
