Shanti Maskey passes away at 83

KATHMANDU, Jan 19: Veteran actress Shanti Maskey took her last breath at Gangalal Hospital, Bansbari, on Tuesday night. Well-known for her portrayal of a frail, ageing mother in Santan, the deceased actress was 83.



As per the hospital sources, she passed away at 10 pm. She was undergoing treatment for heat-related disease for a long time. Maskey’s body was kept at Nepal Academy, Kamaldi for fans and near ones to pay their respect.[break]



On the occasion, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal expressed his deepest condolence to the family, saying, “This is an irrevocable loss for the Nepali Film Industry.” And he stressed that younger generation of actors could learn from the deceased veteran.



Also present at the academy to pay their respect were Minister for Information and Communication Shankar Pokhrel, Minister for Home Affairs Bhim Rawal, Tourism Minister Sarat Singh Bhandari, leaders of different parties, actresses Basundhara Bhusal, Bhuvan Chand, Chaitya Devi Singh and actor Dhiren Shakya.



A well-known character actress of her time, she started her carrier as an actor 60 years ago and is best remembered for her roles in Sundur, Manako Bandh, Santan and Jeevan Rekha.



Maskey, who was born in 1928, had approximately 50 films and tele-serials to her credit, reflecting her versatility in acting.
