The school which is some 80 kilometers away from Biratnagar accommodates four classes in its two-roomed building. Principal Yamanath Kattel said that the District Education Office has turned a deaf ear to his demands for a new office building. “The miserable state of our office explains the everyday problems we face,” he said.

Located in the ´Chisang´ settlement of squatters, the school was established 12 years ago and is still the only education center for the children from 150 local households. A total of 150 students are enrolled in the school.
“When we started the school, we roofed it with plastic sheets and covered it around with twigs. It is a big achievement that we have a small building now,” Kattel said. “We have asked Nepalis living abroad to offer us financial support so that we can construct a new building and enroll more students.”

“Teaching has not been effective because of two classes in a single room,” said teacher Dhan Laxmi Rai. According to District Education Office Morang, over a dozen primary schools in the district do not have a sufficient number of classrooms and conduct two or more classes in a single room. “We have listed such schools and have been trying to manage resources to address the problem,” said District Education Officer Upendra Mandal.
