Rights activists criticize govt plan to bring ordinance

KATHMANDU, Aug 24: Human rights activists and kin of conflict victims have expressed serious concerns over the government´s preparation to give general amnesty to those accused of being involved in serious human rights violation.



In a joint statement issued on Friday a group of over two dozens individuals denounced the government plan to pardon human rights perpetrators against the international laws and established norms on the formation of commissions on disappearances and the commission on truth and reconciliation.[break]



"The government´s attempts to form a single commission is against the letter and spirit of the Comprehensive Peace Accord, the Interim Constitution and the Supreme Court verdict which had envisioned the formation of two separate commissions on disappearances and on truth and reconciliation. We strongly protest and condemn the plan and to mandate that commission to pardon those involved in serious crimes," read the statement.



They criticized the government for not holding enough consultations with the stakeholders and National Human Rights Commissions.



Those issuing the statement include Birendra Prasad Mishra, Kapil Shrestha, Charan Prasai, Dinesh Tripathi, Kedar Narsingh KC and Govind Bandi.
