Talking to media persons after the regional police seminar on Tuesday in Birendranagar, police officials said more personnel should be recruited to maintain law and order as the country´s population has been increasing. [break]
“Maintaining law and order has become a challenging task as there are not enough personnel. The strength of police department should be increased in line with the increase in population,” said chief of mid western regional police, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Parbati Thapa. Thapa informed there is only one policeman for every 414 people in the region.
They also said lack of resources and infrastructure is yet another problem facing the police department. DIG Thapa also claimed that they have been successful in containing criminal activities carried out by armed outfits in the Tarai and drug smuggling in the region.
However, officials said the crime rate in the region has gone up substantially. In 2010/11, the number of serious crimes was 449, while the number of crimes in 2011/12 was 507. Similarly, 70 police personnel faced action for breaching police code of conduct.
