Abdul Miya, of Shreepur VDC in Sunsari, whose crops planted on six bighas of land were destroyed by the flood, has been visiting District Administration Office (DAO) almost every day with hope of getting new installment of compensation. Miya, who received the first installment almost a year ago, laments that he is tired of hollow promises of compensation. [break]
“Government officials always assure me that I will be compensated soon,” Miya quips. “But what does this ´soon´ mean?” The 50-year-old peasant says that he would have heaved sigh of relief had the government officials given him the exact date for paying compensation. Earlier, he had received Rs 600,000 for his land and Rs 84,000 for the lost crops.
Gani Mohammad of Pashchim Kusaha has also been making rounds of DAO. The Koshi floods had wreaked havoc in Ganis´ 15 katthas of fertile land. He received just Rs 97,000 in compensation for his crops. “I have used up all compensation money to fulfill household requirements,” he says. “The second phase of compensation is uncertain.”
The government has already allotted Rs 15 million to compensate flood-victims in the second installment. The DAO has delayed the distribution of compensation as the funds are not enough to compensate all flood victims at once.
