KATHMANDU, March 26: The government is all set to establish ´qualitative rehabilitation centers´ in all the five development regions for over 4,000 people left disabled during Maoist insurgency.

Two well-equipped rehabs are already under construction in Kathmandu and Dharan. Similar facilities in three other regional headquarters are in the pipeline, said officials at the Peace Fund Secretariat, a government body under the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction. [break]

According to an official government data, the number of persons who were injured and left disabled during the insurgency stands at 4,305. However, the government does not have any record on their current medical status. Officials say most of those war victims are either financing their treatment themselves or being supported by the non-government agencies. Some others are being treated at the government-run National Rehabilitation Center in the capital.

The plan for establishing ´qualitative rehabilitation centers´ in all the development regions was announced in the government´s budget for the fiscal 2066/67.

According to Under-secretary Suman Ghimire at the Peace Fund, the rehabilitation centers will be established as in-built facilities in existing public hospitals or medical units. “These facilities can be used for continuous public service after rehabilitating those left disabled during the conflict,” he explained.

Officials said the rehabilitation centers would initially be supported by Peace Fund as part of the peace process. They, however, opined that the facilities should eventually be handed over to the Ministry of Health.

“We will tie-up with public hospitals which will have real responsibility to manage the newly built facilities and provide necessary services as per the government policies,” the officials said. One such rehabilitation facility is being built at BP Memorial Institute of Health Science in Dharan.
