Addressing the 66th anniversary of Nepal Council of World Affairs in the capital on Sunday, Regmi also said that Nepal advocates general and complete disarmament, realizing it as the only sound basis for sustainable peace in the world. “We condemn terrorism in all its forms and manifestations anywhere in the world,” he said.
Regmi also asked the international community to heed the problem of climate change which has been disproportionately affecting countries like Nepal that contribute least to global warming. “We have been collaborating with the international community to take effective measures to protect the environment from being irreversibly degraded. The threat of climate change has emerged as a serious concern for countries like Nepal,” he said. [break]
Regmi also highlighted on a consensus-based foreign policy that Nepal has pursued in order to cater to the needs and aspirations of its own people and to meet the obligations arising out of being a responsible member of the international community. “We believe that regional cooperation would be instrumental in promoting regional fraternity, mutual trust and cooperation among the countries of the world,” he said.
“The complementarities available in the region can best be harnessed through the mechanism of regional cooperation. In today´s competitive and globalized world, economic issues have received due prominence in all the countries because economic progress and prosperity buttress peace and political stability. Our missions abroad stand ready to facilitate trade and businesses fairs,” he further said.
Addressing the function, Minister of Foreign Affairs Madhav Prasad Ghimire said Nepal has to work hard to take full advantage from the phenomenal economic growths both India and China have achieved over the decades. “There is a need to address each others´ mutual concerns, taking both countries into confidence through constructive engagements and creation of an environment where enhanced cooperation leads to the development of economic and social infrastructure, increased investment and trade for mutual benefits,” he said.
Minister Ghimire said tapping regional complementarities of social, political, geographic and economic proximities and achieving the synergy of cooperation through mechanisms such as SAARC and BIMSTEC are also Nepal´s immediate concerns.
