ITAHARI, Aug 24: A medicine shop owner who was absconding for the last three weeks after a child died due to his negligence has been arrested in India.

Pervej Aalam, who was running Rani Sabnam Medical Centre in Dharan, was arrested by a team of Sunsari police from Forbesgunj of India.[break]

Three weeks ago, Roshan Lwagun, an eight-year-old boy of Dharan-15, who had sustained a deep cut in his armpit after falling off a tree, was taken to Khan Medical Centre for treatment. Health workers at Khan Medical referred the boy to BP Koirala Institute of Health Science, Dharan, saying the wound was deep and can be treated only at the hospitals.

However, Aalam, whose medical shop was close by, convinced the parents of the injured boy that he could easily treat him. But, as when the boy continued bleeding, he was to be taken to BPKIHS hospital at the last moment. By the time the boy was taken to BPKIHS hospital, it was already too late and the boy died within hours.

Enraged by the boy´s death, the locals pressed the police administration to arrest Aalam and punish him. “If Aalam had not pretended to be capable enough, the little boy could have survived,” said Mahesh Shrestha, coordinator of a struggle committee formed by the locals.

Area Administration Office, Dharan, was later forced to constitute a probe committee, which eventually held Aalam guilty.
