KATHMANDU, Dec 4: As directors of the event management company I-Brain, Avinash Gurung, Abhilash Aryal, and Vivek Katwal are happy to be where they are. They pulled off Nepal Music Festival 2012 with aplomb and it’s hard to believe that it was one of their first events.

Established early this year in February, I-Brain is looking forward to more great events that carry a social message to the mass while assuring them of a good time. Avinash Gurung and Abhilash Aryal, both 20, sit down to talk about their company, their hopes and how it all started.[break]

At just 20 years of age, it’s commendable that you’re organizing events. Where did the interest arise from?

Avinash: For me, it started when I attended a party in Club Platinum. What struck me was that the event was organized by guys my age. I just talked to them about how they managed to get it done, and with a couple of friends, we organized an event at the same club a few months later and also at Cube.

Abhilash:
I’ve been a badminton player and every time I participated in a game, I was very interested by the way the whole event was managed. That’s how my initial interest was developed. Then around two years ago, a friend asked me to help organize an inter-college badminton competition in Biratnagar, my hometown. In spite of being told that most of the things were all ready, I found that not even the players had been confirmed. So I ended up getting everything organized in four days.

Tell us about I-Brain.

Abhilash:
We are actually childhood friends and when we met Vivek, our other partner, we knew we wanted to get together and do something good. Vivek had just returned from Denmark and he brought with him the idea of creating something similar to the Roskilde Festival in Denmark here in Nepal.

Avinash:
We like to call ourselves a concept developer company and not just an event management company. We guide projects, use our network to help young people with ideas.

What were the initial challenges that you had to face?

Abhilash:
Our age was a challenge in itself. The fact that we’re young and we organizing an event as big as Nepal Music Festival did make a lot of people unsure. Most of the people would frankly ask us if we could really pull it off.

Avinash:
I think what worked in our favor was that we approached them with a realistic and concrete idea. That’s what we always do – make sure that it’s realistic and attainable.

What kind of events do you look forward to organizing?

Abhilash: When I came to Kathmandu a few years ago, I volunteered at Bal Mandir for a year and it brought social causes close to my heart. The events that I want to do should have a social message. However, I firmly believe that entertainment is a good way to place messages closer to a person.

Avinash: We are already working to doing a better Nepal Music Festival in the coming year. Also, we have a few important events lined up.
