Property worth Rs 10m destroyed in City Centre fire

KATHMANDU, Aug 22: Property worth at least Rs 10m was gutted in a fire in one of Kathmandu´s most popular shopping malls on Wednesday afternoon, but caused no human casualties or damage to shops.



Police said the fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon from an electricity generator kept in the basement parking area of the mall´s. Around 8,000 liters of diesel were are stored there.[break]



Police inspector at the Metropolitan Police Circle, Kamalpokhari Kiran Kunwar said fire fighters and five fire trucks were quickly at the scene of the fire, and put out the blaze before it could spread to other parts of the building.



The building which has multiplex, shops and restaurants was evacuated by the police as soon as the fire was reported.



Police said control panel board and cable system were gutted in the fire.



After the preliminary investigation, the police said they believed the fire was caused by generators which had overheated due to the system overload.
