Prime, Premier off to winning start

KATHMANDU, April 8: Prime Sports Club and Premier College started the Second NeCOS Open National Basketball Championship by winning their respective matches on Sunday.



Anusha Malla´s 18 points guided Premier to an emphatic 51-20 win over Morgan College. [break]



Premier was off to a good start in the first quarter finishing it on 15-4. Although Morgan gave a tough challenge in the second quarter it was still unable to reduce the gap.



Premier further extended its lead in the third quarter and then completely outplayed Morgan in the last quarter. Morang was able to score just 2 points in the last quarter. 



Despite the defeat, Morgan secured a place in the quarterfinal as the runner-up along with group winner Premier.







Meanwhile, Prime defeated NASA 39-19 as Deepika Upprety scored nine points for the winning team in the match played at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium.



Prime took control of all four quarters to ensure the victory. Prime jumped to 11-3 lead in the first quarter and despite attempts by NASA to come back in the second, Prime had moved to 24-14 lead. Prime continued its dominence in the third and final quater to seal the victory.



Both Prime and NASA advanced into the quarterfinals of the tournament.



Altogether eight teams, including three from outside the capital, are competing in the five-day event. The eight teams are divided into four groups.



Sarkar elected as wushu president



Special general assembly of Nepal Wushu Association unanimously elected Deepak Sarkar as its executive committee president on Sunday.



The general assembly elected Bir Bahadur Tamang as the co-president while Indra Bahadur Thing, Surendra Lama, BK Tamang and Lok Bahadur Khadka have been elected vice presidents.[break]



Satyaman Lama has been elected as the general secretary while Pratap Thapa is the secretary.



Nani Babu Tamang is the treasurer in the new committee.



Likewise, Rati Lama, Bikas Shrestha (A), Bikash Shrestha (B), Shyam Krishna Shrestha, Basanta Kumar Shrestha, Raju Shrestha, Janga Bahadur Tamang, Rudra Thapa, Ramesh Kumar Shrestha and Bajendra Rai are elected as executive committee members.



Meanwhile, newly elected executive committee nominated Chandra Tamang, Deepak Lama, Janak Prasad Bartaula, Rajiv Maharjan and Kusum Kumari Shrestha for the post of vice presidents while Yuvaraj Gurung has been nominated as co-treasurer.


Nepal Army registers win



Defending champion Nepal Army registered its second straight victory during the Fourth Nakhipot Nationwide Men´s Open Volleyball Tournament on Sunday.



Army beat Kavre Volleyball Club 25-10, 25-15, 27-25 in straight sets in the match played at the court of Namuna Machhindra Higher Secondary School, Lagankhel.



Army had defeated APF Club on Satruday. Last edition´s runner-up APF and Dhorpatan Sports Training Centre (DSTC) also won their respective matches on Sunday.



APF saw off Jawlakhel Volleyball Training Centre 25-11, 25-15, 25-14. Meanwhile, DSTC registered its first 25-21, 25-11, 25-7 win over the host Nakhipot Youth Club.


Veterans tennis begins next week



Citizens Bank Veterans Tennis Tournament is all set to kick off next week in the capital.



The six-day tournament to be held at the Dashrath Stadium Tennis Complex from April 16-21 is being organized by Dashrath Rangashala Tennis Complex Management Committee in association with All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association.



Rajan Singh Bhandari, CEO of Citizens Bank, the main sponsor of the tournament, said during a press conference on Sunday that the tournament will feature top veteran tennis players of Nepal. “We will try to continue this tournament for at least three years.”



The tournament will have events in four age categories: above 35 years, above 45 years, above 55 years (singles and doubles) and above 65 years singles. The total cost of the tournament is expected to be around Rs 300,000.
