Speaking at an interaction titled ´Challenges of Peace and Constitution´ organized to mark the Mahendra Narayan Nidhi Memorial Day in Lalitpur, Pokharel urged the Nepali Congress not to harbor doubts about the seven-point deal reached between Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and his UML counterpart Jhalanath Khanal. “Since the Special Committee is entrusted to take decision on the management of Maoist combatants, the proposal should not worry Nepali Congress,” he said, ruling out leftist polarization and urging the parties to forge a consensus for a broader alliance.
Speaking on the same occasion, Maoist Vice-chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai said the possibility of promulgating the new constitution is not beyond the bounds of possibility even as there are barely three months to go for the term of the Constituent Assembly to expire. “If a new consensus could be achieved among parties, new constitution can be drafted within the time frame of three months,” he said.
Expressing his views, NC parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Paudel said the constitution promulgated before the completion of peace process won´t last long.
He also termed the seven-point deal an ´obstacle´ to the peace process and constitution drafting. “The UML has neither been able to fully own up the deal nor able to reject it,” he added.
