The Special Committee headed by Khanal was supposed to discuss the modality of integration and rehabilitation on Thursday but the meeting instead decided that the issue should be settled at the political level. [break]
“The Special Committee is meeting on Saturday following the prime minister´s meeting with Dahal and Koirala on Friday,” said JP Gupta, a member on the Special Committee.
Though the UCPN (Maoist) has decided to accept the integration modality proposed by the Nepal Army, the former rebel party is yet to accept the proposal in its entirety. The army has proposed that a new directorate should formed for integration of the Maoist ex-combatants and that such a directorate should comprise personnel from the army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and the Maoist army.
In addition, the army has proposed that such a directorate should be given non-combat role and should be mandated to work for development and rescue works during natural calamities and forest conservation, among others. As per the army proposal, integration should be based on individual basis, and not in bulk as sought by the Maoists.
The meeting, according Chief Secretary Madhav Prasad Ghimire, also reviewed implementation of past decisions of the Special Committee.
