“The panel will conduct a field study and submit its report to the committee,” Santa Bahadur Nepali, a member of the team said. “A lot of universities have sought approval. We cannot approve them without making a feasibility study.”
The bills for three universities have already landed in parliament while proposals for setting up six other universities are currently being discussed in the Ministry of Education (MoE).
The number of universities in Nepal has reached nine till now. Nepal had only one university, TU, till the setting up of Mahendra Sanskrit University in 1986. In the following 18 years, four more universities -- Pokhara, Purbanchal, Lumbini and Kathmandu -- were established.
The committee has also issued directives to the ministry to find out about education institutes that have acquired affiliation from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), India.
