The Kamlari emancipation movement had begun from Dang in 2000. In the first year of the movement, the government had succeeded in freeing 36 Kamlaris in Gobardiya VDC of the district.

According to FNC, of the total freed girls, 10,000 are undertaking informal education, 1,000 vocational trainings and 36 others technical education classes.

“More than 12,000 Kamlaries have been freed and all of them have enrolled in various educational courses,” said executive director of FNC Raju Dhamal.

After completing their trainings, many of these Kamlaries have set up their own ventures. In addition, 31 cooperatives in various districts are being operated by ex-Kamlaries, said Dhamal.

However, the report says more than 500 Kamlaries are still working as bonded laborers.

Likewise, the government has filed cases against 42 individuals for keeping and torturing Kamalaries. FNC in coordination with the government has been fighting the Kamlari practice for many years now.
