KATHMANDU, Jan 29: Leaders from the alliance of opposition parties led by Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML have said they have completed all the preparatory works for anti-government demonstrations scheduled for Tuesday.

The agitating opposition parties planned joint protests coinciding with the Martyrs Day on Tuesday.[break]

Members from all the agitating nine political parties including NC and UML will gather at Bhrikutimandap at 1 pm before initiating a march from the same place, said a statement issued by the NC central office.

The demonstrators will subsequently converge into mass gathering at Sahid Gate [Martrys Gate] where some key leaders including UML Vice-Chairman Bamdev Gautam and NC General Secretary Prakash Man will address the gathering.

"This year, we are marking the Martyrs Day by fighting the Maoist plan to impose totalitarian system in the country," UML´s Valley in-charge Krishna Gopal Shrestha told Republica.

A meeting of NC´s key leaders in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts on Monday worked out a plan to make the demonstration "a success". The meeting was attended by chiefs of three districts, area chiefs, representatives from the party´s sister wings, among other members.

Top UML leaders including Madhav Kumar Nepal, KP Sharma Oli and Gautam had given an orientation talk to the party´s Kathmandu-based cadres on intensifying anti-government protests earlier on Sunday.

The opposition parties have planned to conclude their 20-day-long protests on February 8. "We have planned to bring hundreds of thousands of people in our protests on February 8," said Shrestha. "UML has already deployed its central-level leaders to all the 15 constituencies in Kathmandu Valley to mobilize all the party cadres in the movement."
