KATHMANDU, Nov 3: The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Nepal (OHCHR-N) has urged the government and the Maoists to take effective measures to ensure human rights during the nationwide protests.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the UN human rights body asked the Maoist party to ensure that its cadres do not resort to any form of violence and maintain the highest regard to the rule of law.

The UN rights body further said that emergency services, humanitarian actors and human rights monitors should be ensured free passage at all times.

"I urge the Government of Nepal, the Maoist leadership and all other political actors to exercise restraint in response to nationwide agitation. Organizers of the protests should ensure that protestors act peacefully and within the law", said OHCHR-Nepal Deputy Representative Jyoti Sanghera in the statement.
