No consensus on CC chairman

KATHMANDU, Aug 27: A meeting of top leaders of three main political parties failed to agree on a consensus candidate for the chairman of the Constitutional Committee on Thursday.



The meeting held at the residence of Nepali Congress Girija Prasad Koirala, leaders from NC, CPN-UML and Unified CPN (Maoist) could not agree on the issue. “There was no agreement,” NC leader Sher Bahadur Deuba said after the meeting. [break]



Maoist has already announced Dr Baburam Bhattarai as its candidate for the post while NC is all set to field either Nilamber Acharya or Bimalendra Nidhi.



According to a source, CPN-UML, which will not field candidate, proposed to field a candidate with experience in constitution making. Maoist leaders asked to support Bhattarai as the party had already announced him as the candidate.



On Thursday, the parties are required to file the nomination.



Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal however said the talks would continue till Friday morning for consensus.



The ruling coalition of 22 parties are meeting to discuss on the issue Thursday afternoon while Madhesi People’s Rights Forum and three other fringe parties decided to support Dr. Bhattarai on Thursday morning.



Other leaders who attended the meeting include Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, Bharat Mohan Adhikari and Raghujee Pant from CPN-UML, Dr Bhattarai from UCPN (Maoist), Sushil Koirala and Krishna Sitaula from NC.
