“I am also a member of the Constitutional Committee (CC) and I can tell you that the parties are still unsure about the type of constitution to be drafted,” said MPRF Chairman Upendra Yadav, addressing a press conference organized by his party in Biratnagar on Saturday. [break]
He accused the major three political parties -- UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML -- of trying to dissolve the Constituent Assembly (CA).
“How can a new constitution drafted if the three parties hold talks at hotels and restaurants instead of Singha Durbar or in the CA,” Yadav said.
He stated that even if the new constitution was drafted, it would be a document of interests only to the three major political parties.
Yadav also accused the three parties of working to draft the new constitution in a dark room while there is a historic chance to do so from the CA.
“The indecisiveness that looms over the country is because of the three political parties. If the new constitution is not drafted in time, there will be nationwide movements,” Yadav said.
He stressed that the state restructuring must be finalized in accordance with the agreements reached between government and Madhes-based political parties in the past. “Everybody had accepted autonomous Madhes province in the agreements reached in the past. The state restructuring must conform to those agreements,” added Yadav.
In a separate context, Yadav said that a national consensus government must be formed to ensure timely promulgation of a new constitution.
