Nepali team off to Ireland

KATHMANDU, July 24: Nepali U-19 cricket team left Kathmandu on Sunday to participate in the ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifiers scheduled to be held in Ireland from July 28 to August 9.



The Nepali U-19 team, led by Coach Jagat Tamata and Captain Prithu Baskota, will participate in the tournament in which two top countries of five ICC regions and the top six teams from the round-robin event will qualify to join test countries in the U-19 World Cup scheduled to be held in Australia in 2012.[break]



Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) bade farewell to the team on Sunday amidst a program at the National Sports Council (NSC).



“We are expecting to finish within top two. I think qualifying for the U-19 World Cup is not a tough task for this team,” said CAN President Binay Raj Pandey during the farewell program.



Pandey asked players to give their 100 percent during the matches. “We have a dream of playing Cricket World Cup at senior level, and a team that includes experienced players and youths can give us the success. Give your 100 percent to fulfill the dream,” said Pandey.  



NSC member secretary Yubaraj Lama said that success of a nation depends on the performance of individuals during the game. “You have responsibilities on your shoulders and show your sincerity during the tournament. You are ambassadors of the country you represent in sports, therefore, maintain discipline,” said Lama addressing the U-19 boys. “I´m hopeful you will return home with good results.”



Nepal is to take on Afghanistan on July 28 in the opening match of the tournament participated also by the US, Canada, Namibia, Kenya, Scotland, Ireland, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu.



Coach Tamata and Captain Baskota expressed their confidence of doing well in the tournament before leaving for Ireland. They said that they would secure World Cup berth first and fight for the trophy in Ireland.
