KATHMANDU, June 19: Nepal has recorded the highest pre-monsoon rainfall in the past 45 years.
Nepal receives an average of 226 millimeters of rainfall during the pre-monsoon season. However, the country received 339.5 millimeters of rainfall during this year's pre-monsoon period.
Kanchanpur district records highest rainfall in 78 years
This represents a 145.5 percent increase over the long-term average, according to Sanjeev Adhikari, a meteorologist at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM).
Meanwhile, Anarmani Birta in Jhapa recorded the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours at 208 millimeters, according to Dinkar Kayastha, information officer at the department. Rain has been falling continuously in the Jhapa area for the past few days.
Assistant Chief District Officer of Jhapa, Tej Prakash Prasain, said localized rainfall has been occurring in some areas in recent days.
Similarly, heavy rainfall was recorded in Ilam, Morang, Sunsari, Sindhuli, Kaski, Lamjung and Gorkha.
Since 1981, pre-monsoon rainfall has been analyzed based on data collected from 126 rainfall measurement centers across the country.
