Under the slogan, "Know Rabies, Eliminate Rabies", the Mount Everest Kennel Club organized the dogathon with some 600 dogs. The race begun from Tinkune reached Babarmahal via New Baneshwor and Bijulibazar. [break]
Club Chairman Suresh Shah said the dogathon was organized to make people aware about the rabies.
The World Rabies Day is marked every year on September 28. It is also the day the inventor the anti-rabies vaccine, Louis Pasteur died.
Generally, the rabies is transmitted to people and animal once the rabid animal (dog) bites them. The rabies virus is found in the saliva of the rabid animal. Once it enters the healthy body, it gradually reached to brain through nerves and infects it.
As per the statistics maintained by the World Health Organization, more than 50,000 people have died of rabies in the world while 2 million people have saved life with anti-rabies vaccines.
In Nepal, there is only one laboratory to test rabies at Tripureshwor, Kathmandu.
