KATHMANDU, Feb 19: Nepal and India have agreed to seal their shared border 72 hours prior to the general election scheduled for March 5.
A meeting of the Nepal–India Border District Coordination Committee held in Biratnagar on Thursday decided to completely close all border points 72 hours before polling day for the House of Representatives (HoR). The meeting focused on strengthening security arrangements for the upcoming elections.
Way to solve India-Nepal border dispute
According to a press release issued by the District Administration Office, Morang, senior officials from Nepal’s Morang, Jhapa and Sunsari districts and India’s Kishanganj, Araria and Supaul districts attended the meeting.
The committee agreed to intensify joint border patrols and tighten security measures to address potential challenges during the election period.
Both sides also pledged to continue close coordination to curb illegal cross-border activities, including unauthorised entry of third-country nationals, drug trafficking, human trafficking, circulation of counterfeit currency, and the smuggling of arms and cash.
