KATHMANDU, Jan 16: Sister wings of the main opposition party Nepali Congress (NC) has announced a series of protest programs aimed at unseating the present government accusing the prime minister of protecting criminals and murderers and promoting impunity and corruption.

The party´s youth wing Nepal Tarun Dal, student wing Nepal Student Union and sister wing Nepal Women Association in a joint statement announced anti-government protests from Thursday.[break]

NC´s sister wings have announced protests a day after the alliance of opposition parties led by the NC and CPN-UML announced agitation against the government accusing that the UCPN (Maoist) and other ruling parties were conspiring not to hold fresh election and to prolong their stay in power.

"On Thursday, the protest march will start from Shantibatika Ratnapark and converge into a mass gathering at Indrachowk in Kathmandu," read the joint statement issued on Wednesday. "Similarly, protest rallies will be taken out in all the district headquarters outside the capital."

NC sister organizations are also scheduled to take out a mock funeral procession of prime minister in Kathmandu on January 20 as a symbolic protest against the government. They have also planned to hold interactions with civil society members and representatives from various walks of life in a bid to garner broader support.

Uday Rana, chairman of Nepal Tarun Dal, said they will soon come up with an aggressive second round of protests by including other democratic professional organizations such as trade unions and teachers union, among others.

"Similarly, we will stage protests with sister wings of other opposition parties as well," Rana told Republica.

Meanwhile, NC in a statement issued by the party´s secretariat has urged civil servants to perform their professional duty as per the constitution and the laws of the land without bowing to the ruling parties´ pressure. The party has accused the ruling parties of trying to politicize the bureaucracy, police and the national army and misusing them for partisan interests.

NC has said the caretaker government has caused a huge damage to the fundamental values of bureaucracy such as neutrality and meritocracy.

The party has also strongly criticized the Attorney General Mukti Pradhan´s instruction to district authorities in Dailekh to stop probe into the murder of journalist Dekendra Thapa. NC has termed Pradhan´s move as a mockery of the rule of law and promotion of impunity.

Meanwhile, CN-UML-affiliated Nepal Intellectuals´ Council has denounced the attorney general´s instructions, saying it was a move intended to promote impunity in the country. "The council demands free and independent probe into the killing and one should not create any hindrance under the pretext of forming truth and reconciliation commission," the council said in a statement.
