Myanglung-Sakranti road inaugurated

KATHMANDU, May 4: 67 km Myanglung-Sakranti road in Terhathum district was officially inagurated Friday directly benefiting people in 14 VDCs east of the Myanglung Bazar.



The road was constructed under Rural Access Program (RAP) and funded by Department for International Development (DFID), UK.[break]



A statement issued by RAP said representatives from DFID Nepal, Department of Local Infrastructure Development and Agricultural Roads (DOLIDAR), District Development Committee, local politicians and social workers were among those present at the inauguration.



Of the total cost of Rs 252.67 million, 74 percent was utilized in paying wages to the local road workers. A total of 2,218 people, 40 percent of them women, from the poorest households in the vicinity of the construction area were provided employment by the project, the statement said.



The srtatement further claimed that people under the project had been encouraged to save their wages. It said road workers had saved Rs 6.229 million through saving and credit scheme initiated by RAP and over 500 former workers were currently pursuing commercial farming from the wages paid to them, profiting an average of Rs 9,000 per year per family.



Under the Phase 2, RAP has been constructing 365 km road in total seven hilly districts of Terhathum, Sankhuwasabha, Bhojpur, Khotang, Dailekh, Achham and Doti since October 2008.
