KATHMANDU, MAY 29: “To be successful in any field, you have to be a good human being first,” says Reema Gurung, a cherished name in Nepali music.

Out with her second solo album “Samay Sangeet” after a gap of nine years, Reema hopes to win the hearts of her fans all over again.

With a collection of nine songs, the album, she believes, will be a memorable venture not only for her but for her audiences too. “I really hope the songs will stay in people’s hearts for a long time to come,” smiles the soft-spoken diva. From having sung for more than 60 films, she has also tried pop and modern genres.[break]

Reema shared with Republica her views on today’s Nepali music and her just released album.

In 20 years, this is only your second album. Why such a long gap? Was it your conscious decision?

Oh yes! This is definitely a conscious decision on my part. See, the thing is, I believe in quality and not in quantity. Every song I record has to be a novice creation and also be meaningful at the same time. I would be utterly disappointed if any of my songs would be a rage for a certain period of time and fade from people’s minds later on. I believe songs should live forever and it’s obvious that it’ll take me extra time to create something like that.

What kinds of songs have you compiled in this particular album?

I’m receiving a lot of feedback from people and most of them are categorizing my album as Western or Pop. But I would like to refute. The songs I’ve compiled in this album are more of folk-pop songs. I’ve tried my best to give my audience the best of melodies.

From giving a “voice test” to Radio Nepal to recording your second album, what changes do you find in yourself?

I was very young back then, I was raw. All I knew was that I wanted to sing without having the simple idea of the technicalities of music. Now I have the same passion for music but with lots of knowledge. The best part is that after singing all these years, I know my range and the pattern of music that best suits me. You see, like any other field, in music too, you get this sense of maturity that makes you think of the field more seriously and it prevents you from doing frivolous things.

What’s your take on the current Nepali music market?

I’m a kind of person who looks at the brighter side of everything. So I’ll start with what pleases me about today’s music market. I think it’s great that the current music scene has a lot of females who are making it big in the local music market today. Milan Amatya is one good example. These aren’t only strong-headed women but they also seem to know a lot about music which is what impresses me. Apart from that, there’s also the sad part and that is, in Nepali music, there are those who venture into it only because they can afford to record albums. Quality seems to have taken a back seat in the process.
