KATHMANDU, April 3: Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal said on Saturday that his party would launch a purification drive to prevent it from "taking the path of the CPN-UML and deviating from its revolutionary ideals".

“As we are creating a single genuine communist party in Nepal by incorporating others, we face the challenge of preventing the party from taking the path similar to the UML´s,” said Dahal while addressing a function in Kathmandu on Saturday organized to announce his party´s unification with Navaraj Subedi-led faction of CPN (United). The Maoist chairman said his party should head the national unity government as the anti-revolutionaries have raised their ugly head in Nepali politics lately. He also argued that his party would not deviate from the revolutionary ideology and should contribute to the worldwide proletarian movement while heading a government in Nepal.

Dahal also said his party would concentrate on the promulgation of the new constitution by May 28 as the rightists have upped the ante in Nepali politics.

He also argued that it would be wrong to think that integrating fringe communist parties with the Maoist party would sideline the old revolutionaries. “History would evaluate all the leaders,” he said.

Subedi and Lil Bahadur Thapa from the Ram Singh Sirish-led CPN (United) have defected to the UCPN (Maoist).
