KATHMANDU, April 8: Maoists have called a nationwide general strike on April 12 to protest the government decision to award the job of printing Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) to India.

"Our party calls a nationwide general strike on April 12 demanding annulment of the anti-national move taken in a blatant violation of the existing legal provisions and the prerogatives of the parliamentary Public Account Committee and national security, and dissolution of the anti-national government," reads a statement signed by Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

The Maoists took the decision after a meeting of the party top leaders Thursday evening.

Condemning the government move, the Maoist party has called on all patriots, democratic forces and the masses to make the strike a success.
