Mandip Rai of the neighboring Tamlichha-5 seriously injured his mother-in-law Jayansari Rai, 52, by attacking her in the head. The local health posts said she required 18 stitches to her head. [break]
Mandip was not in good terms with his in-laws after attacking his wife´s younger sister Beena, 16, with a hammer when she confronted him about his repeated thrashing of wife. Locals said the in-laws were asking him to pay Rs 250,000 spent in Beena´s treatment.
Lain Singh Rai, a local, said he reached the in-laws´ abode at around midnight and attacked the mother-in-law then searched for his wife and torched the house and cattle shed when he could not find her. “He would have killed the wife had she not fled and hid in a neighboring house,” an eyewitness claimed. His father-in-law Bakhat Ram was not at home at the time of the attack.
The village lies to the remote north of the district headquarters and out of immediate reach of police. Locals have mobilized teams of youth in search of the absconding offender.
