Jaya Ram Oli´s son Yagya Bahadur, 15, his nephew Sete Oli, 14, and Puskar Oli´s daughters --Laxmi, 15, Meena, seven, and Tika, four -- died when landslides swept away houses of Jaya Ram and Puskar in Haiwang, Khara-2 of Rukum early in the morning. [break]
Jaya Ram´s wife Budi, 40, and daughters Pabi, 12, Bhadi, nine, and Hira, six, have been injured and are receiving treatment at a local medical center in Jhultane of Muru Village Development Committee (VDC).
Inspector at the District Police Office Kishore Shrestha said the injured are being treated by a team of health officials sent from the district headquarters as they couldn´t be taken to the headquarters due to landslides at different points.
Two houses and Bal Bikash Primary School in the village collapsed while eight other houses have also come under the threat of landslides.
A team including Chief District Officer (CDO) Krishna Prasad Adhikari, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kishan Singh Thapa and his sub-ordinates and Nepal Army soldiers were involved in rescue efforts in Khara.
Similarly, three more children were killed by landslides in villages in Salyan district Tuesday morning.
Raj Kumar Oli´s sons--Nanda Lal, seven, and Nakhi Ram, four -- and Kasi Ram Oli´s one-year-old son died when Raj Kumar´s house in Kotbara-3 and Kasi Ram´s house in Shivarath-1 collapsed in the morning. Other members of Raj Kumar´s family managed to survive the landslides and are now taking shelter at their neighbors´ houses, according to Inspector Ram Bahadur Dhakal.
Houses of Tula Ram KC, Baljit Basnet and Daya Ram Oli were also destroyed in Shivarath VDC that borders Rukum and Rolpa districts. Police said landslides have also obstructed roads affecting rescue efforts. Landslides and floods have also affected a small hydropower project being built in Banfukhola VDC of Salyan.
