Lama of Machhindra Club accumulated six points in the seven-round tournament after playing a draw in the last round with former Nepal champion Nabin Tandukar.[break]
Keshav Shrestha of Kathmandu Chess Club and Shyam Sundar Shrestha of Machhindra finished second and third respectively. Despite having equal 5.5 points, Keshav stood second on the basis of progressive points.
FM Bilamlal Shrestha, Rajan Chhetri, Nabin Tandukar and Krishna Bahadur Duwal finished fourth to seventh respectively.
The event was organized by the Himalayan Chess Club in memory of late Arun Kumar Shrestha who was the former vice president of Nepal Chess Association and the founder president of Knight Chess Club, Jhapa.
Sunrise, RR in quarterfinal
Sunrise College, Mahendranagar, and RR College, Bara, made it to the quarterfinal of Hotel Devotee Cup National Inter-college T20 Cricket Tournament on Saturday winning their respective matches.
Sunrise defeated Holy Land Higher Secondary School, Nepalgunj by 35 runs to avenge the defeat suffered in the semifinal of the previous edition. Electing to bat first, Sunrise scored 165/3 in the allotted 20 overs. The opening pair of Raghubir Sunar (67) and Prakash Thapa (51) played a 124 runs partnership in the huge total of Sunrise.
In reply, Holy Land managed only 130\\\\6 in the limited over match. Sintakshu Pandey´s 65 runs could not rescue Holy Land as other batsmen failed to shine. Sunar of the winning side won the-man-of-the-match award.
Sunrise will now play against defending champions Pentagon for a place in the semifinal.
In another match, RR College thrashed Tikapur Multilpe College by 45 runs. Opting to bat first RR garnered 144/7. Suraj Patel (26), Jitendra Shah (25) and Kanchan Thapa (22) contributed for the winning side. Chandra Rimal hauled four wickets for Tikapur. In the run chase, Tikapur managed only 97\\\\9 in the allotted overs. Keshar Kunwar (18) and Jagat Thagunna (17) collected for Tikarpur. Samir Thapa of RR College claimed two wickets.
On Sunday the hosts Far-western Cricket Academy will play against Pokhara College of Management and Namuna Mahendra Higher Secondary School will take on USA Higher Secondary School.
National, VS Niketan set up title clash
National Campus and VS Niketan set up the title clash in boys´ section on Saturday during the First Bagmati Modern Inter-college Basketball Tournament. National edged past Reliance 60-44 at the hosts court Sukedhara in the first semifinal.
Kewal Sunwar contributed the highest 17 points for the winning side. In another match, VS Niketan had a narow 40-36 win over Morgan Int´l.
Subash Pun contributed 16 points for VS while Saurav Shrestha topscored with 20 points for Morgan. The final matches of both boys´ and girls´ category will be held on Sunday.
Under girls´ section Nasa and Xavier Int´l have entered into final.
Thapa wins golf title
Bishnu Bahadur Thapa won the title of First Hyundai Open Golf Tournament on Saturday at the Tribhuvan Army Officers´ Golf Club.
Thapa collected 39 points to lift the trophy. Thapa earned 20 stableford points in the front nine and added another 19 in the back nine. Hikmat Bahadur Chand came behind Thapa to secure second position with 36 points. Bikash Bikram Saha scored 35 points to finish third.
LB Gurung took home the title in senior category finishing ahead of Om Pun. Pradeep Kumar Shrestha was the winner amongst the golfers who owned Hyundai cars. Eleven-year-old Prithvi Malla earned the youngest golfers´ honor.
Other winners include SP Basnet (closest to the pin), Rabindra Man Shrestha (longest drive), Dorje T Sherpa (most birdies) and Niraj SJB Rana (best gross).
On Friday, Kincho Lama had won the title under women´s section while Pushpa Rai had finished second. In all, 108 golfers took part in the two-day event organised by Laxmi Inter-continental Pvt Ltd.
Anjan Shrestha, Director of Laxmi Intercontinental, Lt Gen Toran Jung Bahadur Singh, former Chief of Army Staff Pyar Jung Thapa distributed the prizes.
