The 42-year-old mother of three, who was compelled to undergo treatment in Gamgadhi, the district headquarters, due to poverty, died Tuesday night just hours after she was discharged from Rara Hospital in Gamgadhi where she had been for treatment for nearly three weeks.
Lachhuma, a resident of Rova VDC-7 of Mugu, a seven-hour walk from Gamgadhi, was taken to the district hospital of Mugu after the dead fetus got stuck in her womb on August 1. As the district hospital had no doctor, Lachhuma was told to visit well-equipped hospital in Nepalgunj or Surkhet. But, Lachhuma´s husband Dharmaraj, who has been eking out a living by working as a share-cropper could not manage money to rescue his wife. [break]
When Lachhuma´s plight was highlighted by the media, Nepali students from the US, Australia and Norway instantly lent their support to her. They sent Rs 110,000 to Dharmaraj. Lachhuma was admitted to Rara Hospital. Due to excessive bleeding, Lachhuma had suffered from anemia. Three Nepal Army (NA) men donated blood to save her life.
Dr Kishor Pariyar at Rara Hospital removed the dead fetus from Lachhuma´s womb. After the dead fetus was taken out, Lachhuma´s health condition was gradually improving. According to Pariyar, she could eat and even walk slowly by Tuesday.
Dr Pariyar wanted to keep Lachhuma under his observation for a few days more. But, Lachhuma missed her children so much that she insisted on going back home. Giving in to Lachhuma´s insistence, Dr Pariyar let her go but on a stretcher.
However, according to Dharma Raj, they could not manage a stretcher. So, Lachhuma walked all the way to her house. “She vomited twice on the way,” said Dharma Raj. “She died soon after we reached home.”
