KATHMANDU, Nov 24: The appointment of a new vice chancellor (VC) in the Kathmandu University (KU) is likely to be delayed. The special committee formed to recommend the names for the post after resignation of former VC Professor Dr Suresh Raj Sharma on November 9 has failed to conduct even a single meeting in the last 15 days.

The three-member committee led by Minister for Education Dina Nath Sharma has not held any discussion regarding the appointment of new VC, said Daman Nath Dhungana, a member of the committee and also the Trustee of KU. [break]

"As the chief of the committee, minister Sharma was to set the date for our meeting but we have not even held a single meeting," Dhungana.

The KU senate had formed the committee right after Sharma filed his resignation in the senate in presence of Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, the chancellor of the university. Professor Lok Bikram Thapa is another member of the committee. The committee has been entrusted with recommending three names to the cabinet for appointment as VC.

However, Minister Sharma said the meeting of the committee would be called in a couple of days. "We are serious about appointing the VC. We will begin discussions on the issue in a day or two," he said.

On the basis of seniority, current trustee member Dr Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha, Professor Sita Ram Adhikari and educationist Mana Wagle are among the probable candidates for the post.
