BIRATNAGAR, March 7: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala has issued an ultimatum to the UCPN (Maoist) to conclude the peace process by mid-March.

Speaking at a press meet in Biratnagar on Wednesday, Koirala said both the Maoists and UML have failed to conclude the peace process even as the parties have twice led the government after the Constituent Assembly (CA) election.[break]

“Though both the Maoists and UML formed government twice they failed to make substantial progress in the peace process,” he said. “Now, the government should be led by Nepali Congress.”

Blaming the Maoists for delay in the peace process, Koirala also ruled out any fresh agreement with the former. “Maoists have been demanding a new agreement. But there is no point in inking new agreements now,” he said.

In a separate press meet in Biratnagar, NC youth leader Gagan Thapa said there is no alternative other than to change government leadership if the Maoists fail to conclude the constitution drafting and peace process.

Thapa said the current government would dissolve any time NC wants as coalition partners are already at odds. He also argued that new constitution should be promulgated within the stipulated May 27 deadline.
