KATHMANDU, Dec 1: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala has held talks with Upendra Yadav, chairman of Madhesi People´s Rights Forum (MPRF), in a bid to garner Yadav´s support for the NC´s bid to lead a new government.

According to party leaders privy to the talks, Yadav suggested to Koirala to come up with a clear roadmap on resolving the major political issues including state restructuring and constitution-making, to lead a democratic alliance.[break]

"We want the Congress to make clear its stance on some thorny issues such as federalism and the concerns of Madhes and the indigenous communities and we are ready to extend it support in leading a democratic alliance," NC leader Deep Kumar Upadhyaya, who coordinated the meeting between the two party leaders, quoted Yadav as saying.

According to Upadhyaya, the two parties share the common stance that Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai must exit office without further delay and an election government formed immediately.

Upadhyaya described the talks as very encouraging and fruitful in terms of forming an alliance between the two sides in the days ahead.

Yadav also committed himself to persuading the leaders of some other political parties in the Federal Democratic Front-Nepal, which he heads, once NC leaders comes up with a clear vision on how to address the concerns of Madhes and the indigenous communities and other pressing political issues.

"I suggested to Koiralaji to first agree on the broader political issues such as formation of a new government, federalism-related matters and issues concerning the Madhesi and indigenous communities," Yadav told Republica. "Only, then can we hold discussions on the leadership of a new government."

Though the NC is yet to officially announce its candidate, the party is likely to field Koirala for the post as two other leaders, Sher Bahadur Deuba and Ram Chandra Paudel, have already stepped aside from the race.

After receiving a green signal from Deuba and Paudel, Koirala has stepped up lobbying in favor of his candidacy. CPN-UML and some other opposition parties have already promised to support the NC in leading the new government.
