Koirala off to Singapore

KATHMANDU, Nov 14: Former prime minister and Nepali Congress (NC) President Girijra Prasad Koirala has been admitted to the Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore. [break]


The octogenarian leader, who is suffering from multiple ailments, including that of lungs, was admitted to the private tertiary acute care hospital at 4:45 p.m. Nepali time on Saturday, according to his nephew Dr Shekhar Koirala. Doctors have already started tests on him, he said. Koirala left for Singapore for further treatment on Saturday morning. He left on an air ambulance that arrived from Singapore at 4 a.m.







He was undergoing treatment at Shahid Gangalal National Heart Center after water accumulated in his lungs and he suffered from a bout of cold and fever.



According to his doctors, Koirala was taken to Singapore as some of the check-ups he needed are not navailable in Nepal.



As Koirala needs oxygen regularly to avoid his respiratory problem, an air ambulance, which is equipped with emergency medical assistance, was called in to take him to Singapore. His daughter and Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala and two Nepali doctors are accompanying him.



On Friday, Dr Shekhar had flown to Singapore to arrange for Koirala´s treatment.







Requests for urgent treatment



After reaching Singapore, the NC President urged doctors for immediate treatment, saying that he urgently needed to return home to end the ongoing political deadlock.



"Nepal´s political situation is deteriorating. I urgently need to return home to take initiation to resolve the problem. Therefore, I need to get well soon," Shekhar quoted the party president as telling to doctors.
