KATHMANDU, Nov 15: Former prime minister and Nepali Congress (NC) President Girija Prasad Koirala is getting better while being treated at the Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore, according to doctors involved in his treatment. [break]

"His condition is normal and he is undergoing some special tests. He can now go to the toilet himself," said Dr Man Bahadur KC on Sunday evening. KC, who was involved in Koirala´s treatment in Kathmandu, is a member of the helping crew that went together with Koirala to Singapore. The government had called in a sky ambulance from Singapore to take Koirala to Singapore as he regularly needed oxygen to avoid respiratory problems.

Koirala underwent tests including CT Scan, CT Angio and Bronchoscopy on Sunday. According to Dr KC, it would take around three days for the reports of all tests to come and take further decision about the course of treatment.

The octogenarian leader, who was suffering from multifarious ailments, including that of lungs, was admitted to the private tertiary acute care unit on Saturday afternoon.

Koirala was undergoing treatment at Martyr Gangalal National Heart Centre after water accumulated in his lungs and he suffered from a bout of cold and fever. According to his doctors, Koirala was taken to Singapore as some of the tests he needed are not available in Nepal.

His daughter and Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala and two Nepali doctors are accompanying him.
