People of as many as 48 out of 77 VDCs in the district have been drinking water contaminated with arsenic, according to a survey.
A survey carried out by the Drinking Water and Sanitation Division, the water in a total of 1,050 tube-wells is very harmful for drinking as it has high arsenic contamination.
According to the health workers the water that is contaminated with more than 50 pp arsenic level is not suitable for drinking, however, the local people are forced to use the arsenic water for lack of proper alternative sources.
The survey showed water in the western Shivapur VDC was found highly contaminated with the arsenic.
The team sealed some 84 tube-well saying the water from the tube-wells was very unsafe for drinking. Similarly, the water in 48 VDCs including Mahendrakot, Gugauli, Maharajgunj, Chanai, Lalpur, Bahadurgunj and others has been found contaminated with more than 55 pp of arsenic level.
Dr. Ananta Sharma, District Health Officer, said various diseases such as skin cancer, stomach related problems, stone, and psychological problems may appear to those who use the arsenic water.
