KATHMANDU, April 7: It is not always fun to sit at home and neither is it watching TV, especially when we have a 12-hour load-shedding every day. Why not explore the places around K-town and save ourselves from the ennui. Here are a few places to hang out and have fun.[break]

City outside the center too

City Center at Kamal Pokhari is the place to be. The evenings are crowded with people from all walks of life coming for some lip smacking Mumbai food. The vendors outside the main building serve authentic Mumbai street food Paani puri, chaat, sev puri, bhel puri and also golas. The vendors preparing these delicacies have all been brought from Mumbai which make the chaat perfect. The golas they serve come with more than 30 flavors to choose from. So pick your favorite flavor and indulge in it. The food might seem a bit expensive compared to the street paani puri around KTM but with the cleanliness and hygiene paid attention to, it is defiantly worth it.

Must try: Chocolate sandwich, paau bhaaji at the front gate of City Center.

For culture and food

The south-east of Kathmandu, Patan has a Durbar Square and a maze of winding lanes. The Patan Durbar Square boasts of many famous sites and unique architecture. The environment is of a buzzing crowd resting and observing the splendid architecture and the museum, which dates back to 600 years. It is a magnificent learning experience. Sit around on the steps of the temple, sip some tea or coffee and chatter away with your friends. That´s always relaxing. When at Patan Durbar Square, it is a must to visit the ´Hunacha pasal´. Although a small kitchen, the pasal is believed to serve the best Newari delicacies prepared right in front of you.

Must try: Baara and choyela at Hunacha pasal

Where history resides

A stroll in the evenings at Basantapur is relaxing to the soul and a spectacular view for the eye. The Durbar Square surrounds quadrangles revealing courtyards and temples. With distant form objects of cultural legacy, there are also places where you can sit back relax and dine. The Grasshopper restaurant is one place where the food is great. The eatery has been around for a decade now and is most of the time a favorite among the youth. The night market at Basantapur also draws a mammoth crowd every evening when it starts around 6:30pm. If you don´t choose to go to eateries, get some tea for yourself and let the time fly by!

Must try: Tea from roadside vendors and chicken kievana and potato skin from Grasshopper.

Kathmandu´s Las Vegas

Thamel is probably the favorite place for, not just the youth, but for everyone. It´s great in the evenings when the lighted shops display their colorful clothes in the neon lights. The music shops play music and restaurants and pubs play rock and roll all at the same time. Some consider that as the beauty of Thamel. The best thing about Thamel, however, is that one does not need a place to sit back and relax. It is all about roaming around, watching and enjoying. Thamel also has the best bistros in all of Kathmandu.

Must try: There are lots of ´must tries´ in Thamel. We recommend you to try out some pizza at Roadhouse Café and Fire and Ice or blended caramel macchiato and freshly brewed coffee at Himalayan Java.

Peace and prayers

Located in the eastern outskirts of Kathmandu and built around 14th century Bouddhanath is one of the best places to spend a quiet yet elevating time. Pilgrims performing kora, spinning prayer wheels, is a magnificent sight. The evenings at Bouddhanath is usually crowed with people of all ages sitting around the stupa and inhaling the refreshing air. Surrounding the stupa are restaurants serving all kinds of food. The Saturday café is a must when at Bouddhanath. The food served is vegetarian but, it will satisfy your taste buds. Apart from food, the café has a library where you can choose from hundreds of fiction books and, at the same time, enjoy the free Wi-Fi connection.

Must try: Fruit sorbet, potatoes and cheese pakoda at Saturday Café and Khapse from vendors. By the way, if you are looking for Khata´s, this is the best play to buy some.
