Journalists continue protests

KATHMANDU, Jan. 14: Demanding action as per the law against those involved in the murder of Dailekh-based journalist Dekendra Raj Thapa, the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Kathmandu led an hour-long sit-in in front of the Prime Minister´s official residence at Baluwatar on Monday.



Journalists carrying placards and banners staged a sit-in in front of the PM´s official residence from 3:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon.



Addressing those gathered at the sit-in programme, FNJ Vice-chairperson Yashoda Timsena said the movement would continue until those found guilty in the murder of journalist Thapa were punished, and disclosed that the FNJ would announce further programmes of protest tomorrow.



The report of the FNJ mission to Dailekh would also be made public tomorrow, she added.



On the occasion, General Secretary of Nepal Bar Association Bijaya Mishra expressed solidarity to the movement of the journalists.



Likewise, former chair of FNJ Kathmandu Hari Lamsal, Damodar Dawadi of Nepal Press Union, FNJ central member Dipak Pandey, Ram Hari Silwal of Press Chautari Nepal and FNJ Kathmandu chair Govinda Chaulagain also expressed the determination to continue the agitation programmes until the perpetrators were brought to justice.



Meanwhile, Nepal Press Union and Reporters´ Club Nepal have condemned the act of cutting off the transmission of Image Channel Television network.



Issuing separate statements here today, the Union and the Club have denounced the act, calling it an act against independent press and freedom of expression.
