JANAKPUR, JAN 13: Situation in Janakpur Zonal Hospital (JZH) remained tense after two newborns were allegedly exchanged on Saturday.

The dispute arose after both Sangita Sah of Khariyani VDC-5, Dhanusha and Ranu Devi Mahato of Laxmipur VDC-8, Mahottari claimed they gave birth to a male child.

Sangita gave birth to her baby at her residence at around 3 am Saturday. But she was rushed to the hospital after her health condition worsened at around 5 am. “I gave birth to a male child. How can my son change into daughter at the hospital?” a furious Sah wondered.

However, Ranu Devi´s husband Sundar said hospital officials told him his wife gave birth to male child. “How can my newborn son become daughter all of a sudden?” he questioned.

Ranu Devi had delivered the baby in the hospital itself.

Family members of both the women said their babies were exchanged due to the negligence of hospital staff. After hospital administration and police failed to settle the case, the two newborns have been sent to TU Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu for DNA test.

“The DNA tests were conducted on Sunday. The final report will come only after a week,” said Police Inspector Govinda Puri.
