Police conducted a sting operation to arrest Giri´s aide Bikram Thapaliya on Monday. Thapaliya was called at Anamnagar to receive four checks.
Giri had allegedly instructed his aides Bikram Thapaliya and Akash Thapa to extort Rs 150,000 from Gyan Govinda Baidya, a promoter of a construction company. According to the police, Giri had also personally called Baidya through landline and cell phone from inside the Dillibazaar jail, demanding the amount.
Giri was shifted to Dillibazaar jail from Biratnagar in December following a brawl with inmates there. “It seems he deliberately made possible his transfer to the capital so as to be able to commit crimes from the prison,” officials said.
SP Ganesh KC, chief of Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu, said Thapaliya and Thapa forcibly made Baidya last week to sign a paper for the payment of Rs 150,000. “Since then, they were continuously hounding him for the money,” KC added.
Giri was found to have bought gold worth nearly Rs 400,000 while in judicial custody. “We are looking into the possibility of other crimes he might have committed from the jail,” said officials.
